Even when the school year starts at the end of August, there is something about post-Labor Day that makes the school year feel very official! As language educators, we know that setting clear goals is a big part of guiding students toward language proficiency. With the beginning of a new school year, it's the perfect time to encourage students to set meaningful goals in proficiency-based learning. Let's delve into how goal-setting can help your students' language learning journey be successful.

Personalized Proficiency
Help students assess their current proficiency level and identify areas that need improvement. I really like to use ACTFL proficiency level posters to ensure students really understand these levels, and then have students set goals tailored to individual strengths and weaknesses. I also make sure to remind students that they (and me!) are not official scorers - so this is just an approximation and snapshot of where they are at a point in time in their learning!

Language Ladder Approach
I encourage students to view language proficiency as a ladder with rungs of increasing difficulty and complexity. I think lots of us have seen the “path to proficiency” and ice-cream posters…so cute! I like to use a ladder, because this helps students set benchmarks for climbing up the proficiency ladder, one step at a time, and can easily see their progress

Actionable Steps
Break down larger goals into smaller, actionable steps. This approach prevents students from feeling overwhelmed and helps them focus on gradual improvement, boosting their confidence.

Reflect and Adjust
Regularly encourage students to reflect on their progress and adjust their goals accordingly. Celebrate their successes and discuss strategies for overcoming challenges.

By incorporating goal-setting into your proficiency-based teaching approach, you're instilling a sense of purpose and direction in your students' language learning endeavors. Empower them to take ownership of their growth, and witness their enthusiasm as they work towards becoming proficient language speakers!
