How to prep for the summer!

The end of the year is almost here! Whether you’re wrapping up your year already or still have a bit to go, I know that summer break is on your mind

So, how do you close out the school year? Here are my three tips for ending the school year right so you can enjoy summer and start next year on the right foot!

1. Start a list!

Who else loves lists? Whenever I’m closing out the year, I use the notes app on my phone or open a Google Doc and write down my thoughts on the previous year. What went well, and what might I want to change? What lessons, tech, or activities do I want to try out next year? What new rule might I need to implement? What new ideas do I want to try out for next year’s French Club?

2. Prep the room

Before doing anything in my room, I take pictures of everything: posters, bulletin boards, displays, my desk, the student desk layout, you name it. This way, come fall, it's easy to set my desk and classroom up exactly how I like it.

Does your district have a long list of close-out procedures to follow? I always start on this list early to make sure I have enough time to get everything done by the last day of school. Rather than spending a full afternoon packing up my classroom, I spend 10 minutes or so a day packing up and storing what I can. Even after following my district's close out instructions, I also tuck and hide everything away just in case, and label anything that stays in my room with my name and room number.

3. Create sub plans (for yourself!)

I always have the best intentions of spending some of my summer time prepping and planning, but, let's be real...sometimes that just doesn't happen! I always make sure I plan out my first week, and print and prep as much as I can. I know that my future self might still be in summer mode come fall, and will appreciate printed necessities like the class syllabus, and presentations and activities ready to go!

What about you? What do you think about and do to get ready to close out the school year?
